Blind Largs dad on murder charge
By By David Walker
A Largs man sobbed in court this week after being charged with the murder of his partner.
Father-of-four Bryan Monaghan, 54, of Seamore Street, Largs, appeared before Penrith Magistrates Court in Cumbria on Monday accused of killing Nicola Bissett, 52, by stabbing her with a pair of scissors in her home in Appleby-In-Westmorland.
The body of the divorced mother-of-two was found by police at lunchtime on Saturday.
Mr Monaghan, a former oilrig worker who is registered as blind, was charged with murder after being arrested on Saturday night in Penrith, 10 miles from the home where Nicola lived with her daughter Rachel, 18, and John, 16, both from her previous relationship. He was subsequently held in Carlisle.
It is alleged he killed her with a single stab wound to the neck using the scissors after an argument. Mr Monaghan appeared in court wearing dark glasses and a tank top.
He was helped into the dock by two security guards and wept openly throughout the hearing.
Mr Monaghan, who suffered a detached retina and Choroidal Melanoma - a cancer of the eye - as well as glaucoma in 2003, was refused a bail application and remanded in custody to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on 12 November.
The family of Ms Bissett said they were “struggling to come to terms with her sudden and violent death”.
