Complaints were heard at Fairlie Community Council about the state of pot-holes on the Main Road through Fairlie as fears were expressed that there could be a fatality unless something is done.

The main A78 trunk road from the Village Hall towards Station Road is cracked up and is littered with pot-holes, according to Fairlie villagers Nancy McQueen and Ron Gilchrist, who both voiced strong concerns about the dangers for cyclists on the road.

Mrs McQueen said: “There are huge pot-holes in the Main Road between The Causeway and the Station Brae and they have been there for ages. It’s terrible.”

Fairlie council secretary Steve Graham said that the issue had been a problem for months and would be contacting Amey over the issue who carry out road maintenance on trunk roads.

Chairman David Telford be-moaned the loss of the by-pass line which Fairlie Community Council had fought to be maintained behind the fields in the Castlepark area of the village. The by-pass had been mooted for over 40 years but it was removed two years ago from structural plans after the issue was taken to the Scottish Executive.

Secretary Steve Graham said: “They say they are hoping to encourage industry at Hunterston but how can they when the state of the roads are like this? The roads need to be maintained properly. We do regret the loss of the by-pass line behind Fairlie.”

Mr Ron Gilchrist said: “We are supposed to be encouraging cyclists but with these pot-holes, there could be a fatality.”

Other villagers at the meeting remarked upon the unpopular island which was built between the tunnelhead and the petrol garage on the A78 with a street lamp which was smashed into by a car in the past. Community councillor John Riddell asked if Amey had been invited to attend a Fairlie Community Council meeting before.

Councillor Elisabethe Marshall of Largs said she would ask North Ayrshire Council to make representations towards Amey on the matter.
