Welcome to Largs? Long tailbacks due to roadworks in Largs Town Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

The main road network came to a virtual standstill this week as major road congestion due to traffic works on the A78 brought misery upon motorists everywhere in the local district.

Anger was expressed by local businesses who have been ‘crippled’ by the effects as the warm sunshine has brought many visitors to the town with long tailbacks stretching from Fairlie through Largs to Skelmorlie. Road rage has spilled over on some cases as it was alleged that bottles and cigarettes were thrown at workmen.

Following an appeal by the ‘News’ two weeks ago, Amey agreed to start their roadworks a day later on Tuesday as opposed to May Day Monday but Largs, Fairlie and Skelmorlie have ground to a halt since work begun.

Mr Rikki Nardini, owner of Nardini’s at Regattas, said: “I phone the police it has been so bad. It is the worst I can remember in 40 years of trading in Largs. The road workers are telling me that they are getting a lot of hassle with cigarettes and bottles being thrown at them from passing motorists. They are calling their bosses as they didn’t realise it was so busy, and are wanting another way of doing it - surely to god they can do it at night time. This is surely the worst - businesses have been desperate for this kind of weather - why should they be crucified? In 40 years of trading, I have never had to pick up the phone to the police but this is desperate."
