See the 1970 Brisbane Queen in glorious technicolour! VIDEO

Rare video footage has surfaced on the web of the 1970 Brisbane Queen Festival.

Irene Berry was given the prestigious position as Brisbane Queen with the rare cine colour film displaying the crowning event.

The action also includes dozens of floats in a parade at Barrfields Park which looks to be full to capacity.

This year's Brisbane Queen has been cancelled for the first time in three decades due to lack of numbers on the organising committee and a lack of participation.

The much loved event started as a seaside queen event in the 1930s before becoming the Brisbane Queen in 1936 to celebrate the close connections between Largs and Australia through Sir Thomas Brisbane, the soldier and astronomer.

The fascinating footage gives a glimpse of when the Brisbane Queen Festival used to be a massive event in Largs and the surrounding area. The rare footage also shows a scene with the old Kelburn Primary School in the background, which was burnt down the early 1990s.

Hi Im from Brisbane Australia.

It is fantastic to see this footage of the Brisbane Queen festival 1970 celebrations.

But also sad to hear that this years competition has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

I understand that the Queens' regalia was given to the city of largs by the Queensland government as we have a shared history with Largs as our city's namesake was a celebrated son of Largs.

I would love to hear more of the the Brisbane Queen festival history or anything about it that anyone from Largs would like to share.

I work at Brisbane City Hall, where the door from Sir Thomas Brisbane's former home hangs proudly, a gift from the city of Largs in the 50's.

Regards
