£1.1m for Largs community centre
By David Walker
Astute move ... The Stevenson Institute is set for a major £1.1m upgrade and become the new Largs community centre.
North Ayrshire Council have agreed to support plans for a new community centre in Largs with a £1.1 million funding boost.
Earlier this year, the council agreed to explore funds for a new development which they claimed was not connected with placing Moorburn Council Chambers on the property market.
Unlike most other towns in North Ayrshire it was recognised that various venues available in Largs did not meet all of the community’s needs.
NAC have agreed to back a community centre, with the site of the Stevenson Institute in Lade Street thought of as the prime location.
At a meeting of the council, Provost and Largs Councillor Bobby Rae withdrew from the chair stating: “This is an important matter for my constituency and I would like to speak on it.
“The Stevenson Institute is an old building which has fallen into disuse. Largs does not have what could be considered as a community centre.”
He added that such a project was “long overdue”.
Despite some councillors present expressing their belief that funding for Largs was at the expense of the “more modest” refurbishment of Saltcoats Town Hall, council leader David O’Neill said: “It’s long been recognised that there is a lack of this type of facility in Largs. Largs does need this.”
He also pointed out that the final site had yet to be decided, adding: “It’s not specific to the Stevenson Institute.”
