Why Councillor wants police to check taxis
Largs Councillor Elisabethe Marshall has offered to arrange a meeting with taxi companies to stop double parking in the town centre.
Councillor Marshall was responding to criticism from Mrs Chrissie Boyd, owner of Brisbane Taxis who challenged her over comments she made at a North Coast meeting that taxi drivers should be booked by the police.
In a letter to Mrs Boyd the councillor denied berating taxi drivers for doing their job at all hours of the day and night. She appreciated the work they did.
Mrs Marshall wrote: “The problem that we are faced with is that there are 20 licensed taxis in the North Coast area and only 3 spaces on the rank in Largs town centre. It is intended that the final draft of the traffic management plan for the town centre will incorporate a larger rank for 6 or 8 vehicles in the vicinity of the railway station. I believe that NAC Roads will consult with you on this. I also believe that NAC Roads had proposed an additional Taxi Rank on Gallowgate Street but this did not gain acceptance. I assume that you will realise that it is not possible to provide a rank for 20 taxis in the centre of Largs. If you have another solution I would be happy to hear from you.”
Councillor Marshall added:“Given the competitive pressure on the roads in the town centre (car parking, disabled parking, deliveries, bus stances, taxi ranks, etc) it is important that everyone acts within the constraints as laid out by the authorities like North Ayrshire Council and Strathclyde Police.
“Given that there are 20 taxis in the area and at present three places (and in the future 8 places) on the rank there will continue to be a need for taxi drivers (as well as all other drivers) to minimise obstruction to other road users. This is why I have asked the Licensing Authority and the Police to ensure that they take action in relation to double parking which causes obstruction and impedes traffic flow in the vicinity of the Railway Station.”
She concluded that she would ask local councillors to meet with taxi operators.
