CONFIRMATION that the paddle steamer Waverley will sail to the annual Millport illuminations has been made by the company.

Bookings are now being taken for this summer’s sailings aboard the historic ships: Waverley – the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world and her consort Balmora. These ships are operated by a charity and carry 250,000 passengers each year.

This year’s timetable will enable passengers to gain unrivalled access to the most stunning scenery in the UK, providing a range of day and afternoon cruises from ports on the Clyde including Largs and Millport.

There will be Balmoral cruises for the final opportunity to bid farewell to the QE2 when she visits Scotland in October.

Pleasure steamers have sailed on the Clyde since Victorian days and Waverley and Balmoral continue this tradition each year thanks to a large group of volunteers. The importance of both ships in maritime history has been recognised with their inclusion in the National Historic Ship’s Register. They have undergone restoration works with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund – Waverley has been fully restored to her original 1947 condition and Balmoral has restored passenger lounges and an application for funding to complete her restoration is pending.

Kathleen O’Neill, Commercial Director of Waverley Excursions said: “There is no better way to spend the day than relaxing on deck and watching the spectacular scenery slip by. There is a trip for everyone to enjoy – whether it’s a leisurely cruise, a trip to the seaside for the kids or an evening showboat for those who like something a bit more lively. The ships themselves really tell a story about how past generations enjoyed their leisure time.”

Prices start at £11 this year for adults and vary dependent on route. To receive a brochure or book tickets call the Booking Office on 0845 130 4647 or find out more and book online at www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk

On the weekend of September 26 the Millport Illuminations and Fireworks evening cruise is listed as a highlight.
