Happy campaigners celebrate the 20k award from Energy Solutions for a Fairlie eco-garden project.

A socio-economic fund set up by Energy Solutions, who manage Hunterston A Site, has awarded £20K to a "hugely worthwhile environmental project in Fairlie".

Applications were invited from across the Magnox North region which encompasses 5 of the UK’s nuclear sites. Hunterston A Site submitted an application on behalf of the Organic Growers of Fairlie who are bringing a disused industrial site back into bloom by building a sustainable community garden. Local residents and primary school pupils have been using vermiculture units to process organic waste since 2006 with support from the Director of the Scottish Composting Centre, Ron Gilchrist. The group has received substantial interest from other North Ayrshire schools who are keen to take part.

Hunterston A Site Assistant Communications Officer, Kerry McMillan said, “This award from EnergySolutions continues and compliments a long standing commitment and tradition from Hunterston A to support local initiatives. The additional funding stream, created by our new owners, EnergySolutions, aims to support larger local projects over £5K and it is envisaged, subject to confirmation, that this fund will continue on an annual basis.”
