Auld Ayrshire
A classic postcard of Largs Main Street from the 1920s.
What was the last thatched house in Largs Main Street?
During the end of the Victorian era, Largs was beginning to take the appearance of what we are familiar with today as the Clark Memorial Church was erected in 1892. The last thatched house in Largs Main Street was Yuill’s Barber Shop in Main Street (see picture). The site is an entirely different scene today with Colvin Houston’s Estate Agents and the Harlequin restaurant occupying the site.
Largs bay was formerly referred to as “The Green” and the Victoria (North Shore) esplanade was made in 1902. The first motorbuses would arrive at the Pierhead which also had a horse trough which was removed in 1928.
Piper Row (which is now Aitken Street) was a narrow winding lane just big enough for a cart and horse. John Rodgers coal ree, which now stands Gavin’s ironmongers, and the Mission Hall were based in the street.
Largs town centre could have had a vastly different look at the turn of the century. Why?
Early in 1893, the Burgh Commissioners discussed a proposed scheme for a new street in the line of Boyd Street into Largs Main Street but despite a motion passed on the move, the proposal eventually fell through.
