Summer of 69 ... A Brisbane Queen festival shot from 1969 at Barrfields Park.

Who won the best Brisbane Queen float of 1969?

Queen Fiona McNicoll presented the winning float award to Messrs McNish’s entry representing John Lennon (Lindsey Murray) and Yoko (Dorothy Shaw) in a “Largs Love-in”. The ‘News’ reported: “What a splendid show, despite the rain, was the Brisbane Queen pageant on Colm’s Night. The children were great, although many were soaked - especially the youngsters in fancy dress and the members of the youth organisations - they kept cheerful and were not deterred.

“The vehicle parade was rich in colour and ingenuity. A first prize went to John Lennon and Yoko Ono in a “Largs love-in”. On the lorry the girls reclined on the bed, for all the world like the picture of the Beatle and his wife, even to his gestures.”

Something new to the competition during this year was the entrance of the Queen to Barrfields in a canopied litter, carried by a dozen boys of the High School, where the conveyance had been made. Pupils in medieval carnival creations preceded the royal court.

Know Your Largs appears every week in the Largs and Millport Weekly News.
