Garrison back centre stage for Cumbrae Gala
The Garrison will be restored to the heart of the Cumbrae Queen celebrations this weekend as the 44th annual festival anticipates a truly royal seal of approval from the islanders.
This Sunday, Millport girl Daisy McConnachie will be crowned "Cumbrae Queen 2008" - and she will be the first for many years to enjoy her crowning ceremony within the grounds of the festival's spiritual home, from which she will be able to fully survey her subjects.
The annual event will take place this year at the front of the splendidly refurbished building, which is sure to make a wonderful backdrop to the event.
Before The Garrison was closed due to direpair and subsequent fire, the ceremony was always held on the balcony of the building, but had to be held in the Town Hall in recent years.
However, while the balcony cannot be used this time, it is with great pleasure that the festival organisers will return in part to the island's famous landmark, which benefitted greatly last year from gala day donations.
This year, the honour of being crowned Cumbrae Queen has gone to 11 year old Daisy, daughter of Edward and Lesley McConnachie of Balloch Crescent.
