Largs is set for a prestigious royal visit to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Inverclyde Sports Centre.

Her Majesty and Prince Philip are set to arrive on Thursday 3rd July.

Local officials have remained tight-lipped on the visit for some weeks, but the ‘News’ can now reveal that preparations have been in full swing since finally being confirmed in the royal diary.

However, their stay in the town is set to remain brief, with the Queen and Duke due to attend a lunch and reception in Clydebank the same day.

The Queen and Duke are expected to meet Provost of North Ayrshire Bobby Rae, Labour MP for North Ayrshire and Arran, Katy Clark, Chief Executive of North Ayrshire Council, Ian Snodgrass, and Louise Martin, Chair of Sportscotland.

While touring the centre, the royal party will be presented to golf coach Bob Torrance, father of renowned golfer Sam, while John Kent will be presenting a watercolour of Inverclyde House - painted by a local artist - to commemorate their visit.

The 1st Largs Boys’ Brigade - led by Captains Jim and Bridie Lamont - will also be presented to the Queen and Duke.

For full details about the royal itinerary, see this week's Largs and Millport Weekly News.
