Calls for Tory candidate to quit

Local Conservative candidate Philip Lardner has been slammed for his ‘extremist views’ by political rivals, after naming a white supremacist as his hero.

Scottish Conservatives suspended the Westminster parliamentary candidate for North Ayrshire and Arran after a national newspaper quoted Mr Lardner as praising Ian Smith, the controversial former leader of Rhodesia, and defending Enoch Powell’s warnings on immigration.

Labour MP for North Ayrshire and Arran, Katy Clark, said that Conservatives would now be forced to “reassess whether this man is a fit person to be their candidate at the next general election.”
