West Kilbride mum in school row

Comment Bubble Comments (1) Printer Print Article

A local mum has spoken out against plans to ditch a grass field for an all weather playing surface at West Kilbride Primary.

Mrs Gillian McBain contacted the ‘News’ to call on North Ayrshire Council to think again about the project.

She said it was another piece of greenbelt that was being lost in the town after NAC passed a controversial parking project in front of Kirktonhall council building.

Mrs McBain said: “Building an all weather sports facility is great but they are going to build it on top of the grass pitch which is used for summer fayres and school events. There are concreted areas within the school which could be used for an all weather surface. This is a lovely greenfield site and it is going to change with fencing and astroturf laid down.

“They are building car parks in the greenfield areas in West Kilbride and now this. They are trying to change the look of the town of West Kilbride and I feel it is unacceptable. It feels like the people of West Kilbride are getting walked over. It is a beautiful playing field. The council are bonkers.”

The people of West Kilbride should support Mrs McBain in keeping as much natural land in the village as possible. Over the years we've seen much greenfield land appropriated for questionable capital works or sold off to private companies for development. Generally speaking the people of the WK, Fairlie and Largs just sit back and watch the character of their town whittled away year by year. Development and improvement is good but not at the expense of grass - once its gone its gone forever. Go get'em Gillian!
