Zip it? Zippo's Circus is coming to Largs but what is the views of the local public over Advocates for Animals protesting at the event which includes horses and budgies?

Do circuses still have a place as local entertainment or is it now deemed animal cruelty and things have gone too far?

A travelling circus is on its way to Kelburn Country Centre as Zippo’s Circus will be setting up its big top at the Kelburn Estate from 29-31 July.

Zippo’s uses a variety of animals during their circus performances, from horses and ponies to dogs and budgies. However, Edinburgh based campaign group Advocates for Animals have cried foul at the ‘many welfare concerns’ and ‘dubious methods used to train animals to perform tricks and stunts that are unnatural to them.’

This week, the ‘News’ hits the streets to find out what local peoples’ views are about travelling circuses coming to town, whether they pose a genuine risk to the animals or are the protesters quite right and the time has come for circuses with no participating animals. Let the entertainment begin...

Legal eagle Robin McTaggart said: “I think we should have circuses in Largs certainly. We don’t want any damage or hurt caused to the animals. Certain animals can adapt quite easily to performing including dogs, horses, seals and dolphins in particular. On this occasion, I think the activists are going too far in the extreme.”
