A new heritage centre which will celebrate famous figures of Largs past and present from Sir Thomas Brisbane to Sam Torrance has been given a grant for £45,800 from the Heritage Lottery fund.

The St Columba’s Heritage Centre will be based within the Greenock Road Church of Scotland building and is a celebration of Largs heroes from different eras with songwriters Gallagher and Lyle already in talks to provide special memorabilia for the new exhibition.

Mr Ken Welch, who is helping to spearhead the project which will be open this summer, said: “We are hoping to have a more modern collection to open up the heritage centre to people who wouldn’t normally choose to go to these things. There will be a section on the Brisbanes, church history, Lord Kelvin and a more modern section including Bob and Sam Torrance, and Gallagher and Lyle. It will be open all year round and will be based in the north transcept of the church.”

The money will go towards the display cases and lighting and also allows the committee behind the project to appoint a person for at least a year to help with the running of the new heritage centre which will include videos and audio content.

Mr Welch said: “We have spoken to Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle and they both returned my calls - they have both been excellent.
