Fairlie Post Office closure threat
A war of words has broken about between the SNP and Labour over the shock announcement this week concerning the proposed closure of Fairlie Post Office.
Fairlie is one of 13 Ayrshire post offices earmarked for compulsory closure. Villagers who wish to use the services will, if it closes, now have to travel to Largs or West Kilbride.
SNP MSP Kenneth Gibson has claimed that local Labour MP Katy Clark voted in favour of the Post Office closure programme at Westminster but Ms Clark has branded this as ‘lies’ saying the bill concerned a Conservative motion on “criteria” surrounding the selection of Post Office closures.
Mr Gibson stated: “The timing of this sham consultation, in the middle of the summer when many people are on holiday is appalling and Postwatch have criticised the fact that it lasts only six weeks, until Monday 1 September.
“On 23 September the Royal Mail will make public those it will definitely close, which will then shut within weeks. It is only three years since the end of the last round of closures ended, with more than 600 having shut down in Scotland since Labour came to power.
