Largs and Wemyss Bay commuters are to benefit from Britain’s ‘most reliable new trains’ in a move that will also see local platforms lengthened.

First ScotRail network have invested £186 million in 38 new electric trains that will run on routes linking Glasgow with Glasgow Airport, Ayrshire and Inverclyde from the end of 2010.

Some £40 million will also be spent on lengthening platforms on the Glasgow to Ayr, Ardrossan, Largs, Wemyss Bay and Gourock lines to accommodate the longer trains.

The three and four-carriage Desiro Express trains are to be new versions of those operating the Heathrow Express.

The trains will be built by Siemens, which last year won the £220m contract to construct Edinburgh’s tramline network. The jobs created will be for train and maintenance staff.
