DURING the Olympics, Cunninghame North MSP Kenneth Gibson has called for 2014 Commonwealth Games events to be held in Largs and Cumbrae.

The local MSP was surprised to learn that sailing was not included in the list of medal events and is keen to make it a yachting first when the 2014 games come to the west of Scotland.

Mr Gibson has written a letter to Mr John Scott, the Chief Executive of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, urging that sailing is considered as an exhibition event.

In the letter, the MSP states: “The Scottish Sailing Institute in Largs and the Sportscotland National Centre on the Isle of Cumbrae are keen to host water based exhibition events in the 2014 Games.

“These venues are already being considered as hosts for formal water based events as part of the 2012 London Olympics. This is testament to the fact that these facilities have well established international renown as first class sporting centres, having hosted international competitions and regattas of the highest standard as, indeed, they will continue to do so.

“I am aware that events such as canoeing, kayaking, rowing and sailing, which are Olympic events, will not be formally included in the 2014 Games and neither will other recognised water based sports such as power boating, surfing and water skiing.
