A group of local councillors have been told that the Largs Pier is close to collapse as proposals for the final development are about to be contracted out to a harbour construction company.

At the North Coast council meeting in Moorburn Chambers, it was revealed that time is of the essence in the re-building of the new harbour which would appear to be, quite literally, on its last legs.

Lorna Spencer, Director of Piers and Harbours, for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd, addressed the meeting. She said: “The current pier was built in 1832. There have been a number of operations to re-inforce it over the years. It is currently unsafe for public access and it is danger of falling down very shortly unless we re-build it. I don’t want to scare anybody but the pier is not in good condition. The pier is very important for Cal-Mac operations and as a sheltering facility during adverse weather and overnight berthing, though the current Cal-Mac ferry is berthing at Fairlie at the moment.”

“The new pier will be a solid structure for the future and with work set to begin in the autumn, the completion date is planned for next summer.”
