Resident Archie Corral, left, quizzes CMAL about access to the new Largs Pier during a recent consultation event at Vikingar!

A large turnout of visitors examined the plans and a model of the new Largs Pier which is set to begin construction work with an official opening date of July 2009.

The new £6m Largs Pier will have a similar “L” shape to the current harbour but will be greater in length. CMAL (Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd) is delivering the new Pier working in partnership with ferry operator CalMacFerries, consulting engineers Arch Henderson LLP and contractor George Leslie Ltd.

Due to budgetary requirements, initial proposals for a “T” shaped pier were not pursued. Members of the public raised concerns with representatives of CMAL during the consultation at the Vikingar! concerning public access to the pier. CMAL responded that the matter would be dependent on health and safety matters.
