Charity shops beat credit crunch
Charity supporter ... Bill Alexander of Largs was one of many who supported charity shops in the area.
The “News” ventured into the Ayrshire Cancer Support Group premises in Bath Street in Largs and asked some of the volunteers about life in a charity shop. On a wet and windy Thursday morning, with other shops comparatively quiet, this little “Aladdin’s Cave” had around seven customers in the pokey little premises but the volunteers wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.
Charity shop worker Margaret Sutherland said: “The antiques are very popular and people definitely prefer something of the old. I think we are a bit of an Aladin’s Cave. We are small little premises but we manage to fit a lot of different things in and I like it a lot. We are all volunteers who are involved in the shop and I think it has been here for a long time.”
Colleague Catherine Pachitti said that they also provide a valuable listening role in the community. She said: “We get a lot of unusual antiques brought into the shop and we get some really beautiful things. We have even had a violin and a clarinet handed in recently. People like something old rather than new.
