Hygiene fears at Vikingar!

Local residents fear that the facilities at Vikingar! in Largs have taken a major downturn - after reports of poor hygiene, regular class cancellations and doubts over the future of the soft play area.

Earlier this year, members of Largs Community Council said that they had received letters from residents telling them that hygiene standards within the swimming pool facilities at the Vikingar! centre - run by North Ayrshire Leisure - were simply “not up to scratch”.

However, at last month’s meeting, committee members stated their belief that some areas of the pool looked like they have “not been washed” in some time.

New councillor Linda McInnes said that, while overall hygiene around the pool had improved earlier in the year, it had taken a new downturn in more recent times, claiming that cleaning staff were never seen at work.

Chairman Ian Murdoch commented: “I don’t think it’s been good for the last 20 years. Somebody should have an on-site inspection.

“I don’t know if the councillors can walk in unannounced. If they say they are going in on Tuesday, there would be bleach everywhere.”

Councillor Ewen Maclean said: “I suggest we write (to North Ayrshire Leisure) and send a copy expressing our concerns to the manager.”

This week, local MSP Kenny Gibson contacted the ‘News’ to voice his concerns over “a possible public health risk” which had recently arisen at Vikingar!
