No ageism for Skelmorlie minister

A new village minister has made history by dismissing retirement altogether and going back into the pulpit at the ripe old age of 67.

Morris Coull is the first clergyman in the Church of Scotland to take up a permanent post after passing retirement age - and he has chosen to do so at Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay Parish Church.

Rev Coull stepped in as locum minister following the recent retirement of Rev Bill Armstrong, but he and wife Ann quickly fell in love with their new surroundings.

When it became clear that Rev Coull could take advantage of new anti-age discrimination laws to continue his good work, he grabbed the chance with both hands.

Promising to bring fresh energy along with experience to his new parish, Rev Coull said: “If you feel old at 65, you will be old at 65. I still feel I have the desire, the passion and the energy to continue..”
