Thistle face cup holders Rose

Largs Thistle will face a massive test in the preliminary round of this season’s Scottish Junior Cup after drawing the holders.

In a round where the vast majority of teams get a bye, Largs drew holders Linlithgow Rose, who are also competing in the Scottish senior FA Cup.

Linlithgow - who won the trophy by beating Kelty Hearts at Dunfermline’s East End Park in June - will line up at Barrfields on Saturday 6 October - after the surprise draw was made at Hampden last week.

The high-profile fixture against Jim Sinnet’s men represents the biggest test yet of a Thistle side still struggling for consistency, but it should also prove a lucrative one with a big crowd set to take in the action.

Linlithgow will play Newton Stewart in the first round of the Scottish Cup on September 29 before their Scottish Junior Cup tie. There is a chance that Rose could face a replay on the day they are to meet Largs.

Meanwhile, before facing a trip to Renfrew on league business on Saturday 29th, the Largs squad has been boosted by the news that prolific striker Phil Cannie has pledged his future to the club.

Following a bust-up with management that saw him being put up for transfer, Cannie has told coach Sandy McLean that he will knuckle down for the good of the team. He came on as substitute on Saturday.

Thistle secretary Kenny Smailes said: “Everybody is good after the Troon game. In the case of Phil, he wants to stay at Largs. He is going to show what he can do for us - Phil does not want to go.”
