New open top bus to launch this weekend
The last time an open top bus was on Largs seafront was when Largs Thistle won the Scottish Cup in 1994.
A new open top bus service is being introduced this weekend linking ferry terminals at Wemyss Bay, Largs and Ardrossan as part of a tourism venture.
Driver and fleet engineer with Glasgow Corporation Transport, Lawrence Hayward, is launching the weekend and Bank Holidays service.
He said: “This is going to be unique in the area. Eighty per cent of the run is coastal and you will see things you would otherwise miss if you were driving in your car. For a day out, it will be great. And if you buy a ticket then you can get off along the way and look around, before catching the bus again to continue with your journey.
“The service will link the ferries and train stations. If the demand was there, we would consider running the service through the week in the summer as well.”
Mr Hayward attended a business tourism conference in Largs last week and told the ‘News’ that he is in discussions with Kelburn Country Centre in terms of extending the service to the centre. Buses will be leaving from Wemyss Bay and Ardrossan ferry terminals at 8.25am and on an hourly basis thereafter till 5.25pm.
Mr Hayward said that the bus would look towards capitalising on major local events such as the Viking Festival and yachting regatta.
