Thistle manager Sandy McLean said the second goal for the Buffs was crucial in Saturday's encounter against Kilwinning.

The 3-0 defeat puts Thistle's promotion hopes in jeopardy as they face a crucial match at Barrfields this weekend against Renfrew.

While Largs are still in the top three, the teams below have games in hand, making the Renfrew encounter a must win if Largs are to maintain any slim hopes of promotion.

Sandy said: "In the first half, we were not at the races. When you concede in the first minute, it is always difficult. They hung on and in the second half, we changed the shape and I thought we kept the ball a bit better. We had chances to equalise but it was always going to be about who scored the next goal.

"It was very disappointing the manner in which we lost the game. The first half we didn't create any chances - that is the first time that has happened. The longer the game went on, we did have chances to get back into it. I can't argue with the penalty kick - Stewart Hendren caught him and that was that. Big Neil was caught for pace and brought the man down - and that was another red card.

"We can't afford to lose many more games as then it becomes more difficult. We need nine points from our last three home games."
