Hands up! Largs keeper Steven Connick had another accomplished performance on Saturday.

Largs Thistle 1 Renfrew 1

We’ll put it down to the atrocious weather. It was an atrocious game and yet another poor home display by Thistle.

This time they were a goal ahead against ten men Renfrew with five minutes to go and ended up losing two points.

The game should probably not have gone ahead as it was played in a monsoon with passing of the ball not possible.

What happened in the first half was that most balls were overhit and skidded out of the park.

There was not a single effort on goal until the 25th minute when Alan McCabe had a shot deflected high and keeper Marshall had to clutch the ball on the line. Minutes later Renfrew defender Hammond made a last gasp tackle to stop John Robertson pulling the trigger.

To be fair, Thistle did almost all the pressing in the first half but the front pair of McCabe and Jamie Marks were not able to hold the ball.

At the start of the second half Renfrew moved up a few gears and suddenly keeper Steve Connick was diving about making important saves. He was helpless when Docherty hit the bar but the ball rebounded to safety.

On the hour mark Largs defender Ross McMillan, signed from Renfrew, came up for a freekick and flicked the ball over the bar and then Tom Jamieson shot over the target.

From my observations over the past two Saturdays the Largs players can’t hit the proverbial barn door.

However, Thistle’s goal in the 64th minute came from a Gus Gault corner which McMillan rose to head high into the net.

Thereafter, an experienced Largs defence should have held Renfrew, especially, when visiting defender Jamie Mort was sent off for a last man challenge on substitute Willie McClure who looked lively when he came on.

Ironically, ten-men ‘Frew raced upfield and a cross ball landed at the feet of Crowhurst to shoot home the equaliser in the 85th minute.

Renfrew looked like getting the winner in the final minute and only brave goalkeeping by Connick kept a point secure.

There is definitely a case for summer football but whether the present Largs squad would be good enough for promotion is open to serious doubt.

Largs Thistle: Connick, Molloy, McCann, McMillan, Shearer, Robertson, Jamieson, Gault, Marks, McCabe, Dow. subs - McClure, Donnelly, Cannie, McWilliams.
