Largs Thistle will be looking towards the services of silky striker Phil Cannie for goals as the league comes to the crunch this week with FOUR games in a week.

Largs Thistle manager Sandy McLean said his side put in an appalling showing against Kilbirnie but backed his players to bounce back into the promotion race with five games to go.

Defender Stewart Hendren, a potential player of the year in many people’s eyes, and maverick marksman Phil Cannie, are back in contention for the Maryhill encounter at Barrfields on Saturday. 2pm kick-off.

An excellent addition to the side has been Ross McMillan who is an injury concern for this weekend.

Thistle are still licking their wounds after suffering a five goal demolition to Kilbirnie but with experienced players back in the side, McLean is looking to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.

Sandy said: “We need to go and do something which we have not done before and win our last five games. Tom Jamieson and Gus Gault are both skating on thin ice at the moment as they are one booking away from a suspension. Maryhill are difficult opposition but the players are very resilient as they have proved already this season. When they have taken knocks, they have bounced back, and I expect the same again. “This is the time of year to put a run together and Saturday is a good time to start doing it. We have gone down a few places in the league but our aim is to still keep the pressure on.

Reflecting on last Tuesday’s 5-0 defeat, Sandy said: “Kilbirnie are a good team. There is an old saying in football that you can win games if you have eight players playing well and three who aren’t, but last week it was the reverse. It was appalling last week and everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. We have normally been good with crosses into the box but it didn’t happen for us.

“The players know they let themselves down but there are still 15 points up for grabs. There are still three promotion places and we are still part of the mix with five or six teams. We have made things difficult for ourselves now but like I say, we have shown our resilience this season when need be, and we need to do so again.”

Late News ... Largs Thistle face Vale of Clyde away on Monday 28 April 7pm, East Kilbride at home on Wednesday 30 May and Clydebank away on Saturday 3 May.
