Thistle finish season with a win
Black is back ... Thistle striker Graham Black, who has been absent in recent weeks, returned from injury on Saturday.
Johnstone Burgh 0 Largs Thistle 2
Largs finished their season with a comfortable victory away to basement boys Johnstone Burgh in the Stagecoach West 1st Division.
Goals from Martin Dow and Jamie Marks secured the win as Largs created a barrel-load of chances at Keanie Park.
Burgh are one of the worst sides to have ever competed in the superleague since it was formed and they are still looking for their first win this season, so anything other than a positive result was necessary for Largs. Interested observers at the game included the ex-Largs management team of Stephen Quigg and Archie Halley.
Willie McClure burst past three players but his direct shot was well saved by the Burgh keeper, who has had plenty of practice this season.
Ryan McWilliams was in goal for Largs and was forced to palm over James Donnelly’s well struck effort from the edge of the box.
Tom Jamieson and McClure collided as a header went a-begging at the opposite end, and a McClure volley was well saved by the keeper.
The breakthrough came on the half hour mark and it was a well set-up move as Jamie Marks threaded the ball through to Jamieson in sight of goal but he turned the ball back to Dow who had the easy job of sliding the ball into the bottom right corner from eight yards.
A good run and cross from Scott McNicol on the left set up the on-rushing Marks who cleverly dinked the ball over the keeper but narrowly wide on 41 minutes.
Largs doubled their lead on 52 minutes as a long ball was hoisted to Marks who managed to lob the outrushing keeper who ended up bringing the Thistle forward down. Despite Marks’ shot finishing in the back of the net, the referee had awarded a penalty kick and Marks had to dust himself down before firing home from the spot. It was his fourth goal in three games.
Thistle will wonder how they did not add to their tally after that with Graham Black and McClure going so close on several occasions As expected, Largs were head and shoulders above Johnstone Burgh but missed a glut of chances to end the season with a more convincing win.
Largs: McWilliams, Molloy, McNicol, McCabe, Hendren, McMillan, Black, Dow, Marks, McClure, Jamieson. Subs: Robertson, Gault, Cannie, Shearer, Connick.
