United still in promotion frame
Largs United 4 Winlinton Wolves 0
United won their penultimate match of the season with a convincing victory over Irvine outfit Winlinton Wolves.
The two sides had shared the spoils earlier in the season with a 2-2 draw which United felt aggrieved about and they set out to ensure all three points were staying in Largs.
McCafferty's goal was guarded by a back four consisting of Campbell, Giovino, Renfrew and Tweedie and they never gave the visitors a sniff in a one sided first half. Mitchell, Barr, Cairns and Morris made up a midfield quartet and they passed the ball well and linked up with Hendry and McDonald.
Despite having the lion's share of possession, United were wasteful in the opening stages as they squandered three chances in quick succession. On the rare occasion of a Winlinton attack, Giovino and Renfrew snuffed out any danger and set United on their way with Tweedie and Campbell enjoying the space on the flanks. Although well on top, it took Largs until the 45th minute to break the deadlock when midfielder Davie Mitchell latched onto a loose clearance and drove it low into the net with the outside of his boot from twelve yards. Mitchell had looked a little out of sorts but his contribution split the teams at the break and the goal settled United.
With a spring in their step, Largs started well with a little more urgency and the efforts were soon raining in on the visitors' goal. Whilst looking solid at the back, United were struggling to get the breathing space of a second strike and so Andy Scott, Scott Cameron and Paul Carson were unleashed from the bench and the breakthrough finally came. A good delivery into the box from Mitchell was bundled over the line at the back post by Andy Scott to give United a 2-0 lead in the sixty-seventh minute.
Tweedie and Cameron linked up well down United's left hand side and Largs were also finding more space to play in the middle of the park as they stepped it up a gear. A United attack drew the Wolves keeper from his line to clear the danger but his sliced effort landed at the feet of Hendry some thirty five yards from goal. Hendry steadied himself before meeting the ball first time and hooking it high into the net to put Largs on easy street.
Mitchell was drifting in and out of the game on the right but made another telling contribution in the closing minutes when he tore down the wing and went past three men before squaring to Andy Scott for a tap-in and bring down the curtain on the last home match of the season.
All that is left for United is a trip to Ardrossan this Saturday to play Castle Rovers and try to put themselves in with a shout of the extra promotion place that's become available due to the demise of Irvine Thistle in the top flight.
