Largs Thistle is a small business

The Largs Thistle President Douglas Bennie has likened running the club to a small business as it now costs approximately £40,000 a year to operate.

Mr Bennie told the ‘News’ that fundraising is a major issue and regular events need to be carried out by the small band of volunteer committee members to keep the historic club afloat.

He said: “We are always looking for hard-working members, it takes a lot of hard work to keep the club going. Our recent sportsmen’s dinner raised £2500 but in reality, that is a small proportion of the £40,000 we need to raise per year.

“Only £9000 comes in from match days, and all the rest has to come from fundraising. The days of ten bob notes in the boots (to sign players) are long gone. Wage costs are a high proportion of the club’s turnover. and, of course, it has a bearing on the quality of player that we manage to bring in to the club. We are not unique - we are in exactly the same boat as other junior clubs.”
