Magnificent ... Largs coach Bob praises Open winning pupil
Praise ... Golfing coach Bob Torrance praises Padraig on his second successive Open win and says anything is possible.
“One of the best ever” - that was how Largs coaching master Bob Torrance described pupil Padraig Harrington’s Eagle in the penultimate hole before lifting the Open championship.
At Royal Birkdale on Sunday, Harrington achieved a rare feat in lifting the Claret Jug for the second consecutive year, with Torrance lavishing praise on his ‘best ever pupil’.
The pair have now worked together for 12 years and share a passion for spending hours in the practice range, leading Torrance to say that his pupil is the most diligent he has ever worked with, practising ‘from dawn to dusk’.
The 76 year old said: “There are never any arguments or grumbling if he hits the ball bad. He just says I’ll practise harder and I will get it right’. I’ve always wanted a young talented guy who was prepared to work and after a month of working with Harrington, my wife June said to me, you’ve got one.’ We’re up on the range every day in winter and it is bloody freezing up there. He had the wrist injury as well this week and he was taking painkillers.
“I think Padraig has the ability to win anything he wants to win. I think he will win the US Masters and I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins the US Open as well. He’s got the capabilities and mindset to win.”
