Walk and cycle in harmony in Largs
I buy your newspaper every week and nothing has made my blood boil as much as the headlines about cyclists on the prom being called bike brats.
I wish to point out to Councillor Tom Marshall and Chairman Ian Murdoch and everyone else involved, that the danger to pedestrians is primarily from the “nice weather visitors” to Largs who meander all over the promenade, eating their fish and chips, allowing their children and dogs to wander without due care and attention.
I have often seen cyclists who are obeying the rules and sticking to the cycle path, having to come off it to avoid these people who wander on to it, totally ignoring the signs. What’s the alternative?
Would Messrs, Marshall and Murdoch rather cyclists use the main A78 road which is in constant use by buses, trucks, lorries, vans and cars, most of which do not adhere to the speed limit. I find it impossible to walk on the pavement running alongside that road without being almost sucked in by the roaring traffic. I certainly would never risk cycling on it.
As a resident of Largs, and one of the many who pays the extortionate council tax, I would suggest that some of our money be spent making clear signs and white lines on the promenade, so that visitors and locals alike, will be in no doubt as to where they should or should not walk. I often visit Hove and the pedestrian and cycle lines there are very visible. No one steps over those lines. There, people can walk and cycle in unison. Surely we can do the same.
People I speak to in Largs dismount their cycles when they reach the busy areas and walk. Please do not tarnish all us responsible and considerate cyclists the same as the irresponsible and inconsiderate minority. That’s very unfair.
As to the “vindictive, spoilt brat attitude of local cyclists”, who says they are locals? Where do these people conjure up this information?
C’mon you people, let us walk and cycle in harmony and please let all of us use our common sense.
C Harrison

Warnings aplenty... But is it fun anymore?
