Hunterston nuclear..a gift from God
THEY would never let me into the Scottish National Party - not that I’ve tried - because I would be a conscientious objector.
If I was in the SNP I would start a wing that supports nuclear power because of its crucial importance in the immediate future of the energy supplies in this country. Virtually free of carbon emissions too.
Like all right-minded individuals - the kind of people I write this column for - I believe in a balance of energy supply. By all means, continue to work on providing shed loads of renewable ‘green’ energy for future generations but meanwhile let’s keep the lights on with tried and trusted energy.
Hunterston Power Station is certainly tried and trusted in this area for 50 years having also provided essential employment for thousands of local families.
So, congratulations to the magnanimous attitudes of the Conservative and Labour groups on North Ayrshire Council in joining together to announce their support for a new third station at Hunterston.
Local SNP councillors Bobby Rae and Alan Hill were absent at the vote but their nationalist colleagues toed the party machine line and voted against Hunterston along with the woolly bunnet brigade of Liberal Democrats.
The young LibDem leader on the council said that instead of Hunterston we should all have “microgeneration” in our homes. I have written to Councillor Andrew Chamberlain inviting him to write an article which tells us how Mrs McTavish of Haco Street could install microgeneration in her house. I have also asked him to tell us in which year tidal power will be able to substitute for nuclear power. In fact, can anyone tell me any part of the country that is accepting the wind farms which are supposed to be the new electricity?
Nuclear energy is a gift from God. It is a wonder of nature. Nuclear waste already exists and will do so for hundreds of years. We’re clever enough to deal with it and there is a decommissioning fund to pay for it. Live with it. They say it’s even good for combatting global warming!
