Provost Bobby against nuclear stations

In a recent issue you reported on a meeting and the vote by NAC Councillors on building Hunterston ‘C’ power staion. This was gesture politics, nobody believes it will bring a third Nuclear Station any closer.

In your Editor’s column you go right over the top by claiming that nuclear power is a gift from God; it is more like the forbidden fruit! Nuclear power is only an expensive way of raising steam to run the turbines that drive the alternators to produce electricity.

Nuclear Power stations are expensive to build and run, the decommissioning costs are astronomical! That’s alright says the editor, “we have a fund available for this,” supplied by the tax payer, he neglected to tell readers.

He believes in a balance of energy supply, so do I - but not at the formidable costs of nuclear power.

The Editor goes on to state that my colleagues “toed the party machine line”, whatever that is? Policy in the SNP is made by the members, at our National Council, and our National Conference, not handed down by the leadership. In all my time as Councillor, the SNP have never imposed a ‘whip,’ only Labour impose it regularly, and recently the Liberals imposed it at the Budget. However on the contentious nuclear issue, I’m sure the Editor and I will continue to agree to differ.

Provost Robert H Rae.
