Largs fudge made in York...with nae whisky
On a recent trip to Largs, which we greatly enjoyed, my wife and I also took the opportunity to buy some souvenirs at one of your local shops. Because of the good impression the town had made on us, we decided to buy something locally made.
We saw some boxes of fudge with the title “A Gift From Largs” and marked with tartan. Assuming, as anyone would, that this was local produce made in the traditional
Scottish way, we bought a few boxes, including one box of “whisky flavoured fudge.”
When we got back to Japan, we tried the fudge and were very disappointed by the taste, especially the “whisky flavoured fudge.” On examination, this was found to contain zero whisky, raising the philosophical conundrum of how one can get something as complex as the flavour of whisky without using actual whisky. The fake flavour only made the fudge taste worse.
After careful scrutiny of the boxes, which did not have the full address of the maker, we found the postcode BD20 0EE. An internet search showed this was based in West Yorkshire. So, not only did this “whisky flavoured fudge” not contain whisky, but “A Gift from Largs,” swathed in tartan, came from West Yorkshire. Such poor quality would be unlikely in fudge produced in the traditional Scottish way.
Because of the inferior taste and the deceit practised by the maker and the retailer in trading on the good name of Largs in this way, I felt angry enough to write to both the maker and the retailer, both of whom admitted no wrong. I am, therefore, writing to you, so that your readers may learn how the tourist industry of Largs and local jobs are being hurt by such misleading and dishonest practices as labelling inferior non-local produce as “from Largs.”
In this age of rampant globalisation and economic insanity is it too much to demand that any product labelled “A Gift from Largs” should be made in Largs?
