Boom Blox
By Narin Bahar
When a game lands on your desk that has legendary director Steven Spielberg's name on it you think you know what you're going to get. This is the man behind Saving Private Ryan and the Indiana Jones trilogy after all - so there's going to be swashbuckling, lush next gen graphics and an all encompassing story to make the heart swell.
Guess again.
Boom Blox is a strategy game which at first glance looks a bit like a hyperactive Jenga rip off, but has way more depth than you would think.
Basically a physics-based puzzle game - but much more interesting than that sounds - Boom Blox involves throwing balls, stacking blocks, and manoeuvring pieces to clear levels, mainly through wild destruction.
You swing your Wii remote to make the right movements - whether that's pushing, pulling, throwing balls or even setting explosive chain reactions, with the mechanics of the movements proving surprisingly instinctive.
There are hundreds of levels and with a strategy mode which at points was the most fiendishly frustrating I've placed since Lemmings and a party mode which is great for multiplayer, this game really does have everything. It's varied, fun and the sheer scale of it means you'll be playing it for ages.
Yes, it's probably the oddest game you'll play this year, but I guess we can't complain that Spielberg and co have thought outside of the box. Or should that be Blox?
* Boom Blox is out now for the Wii.
