Space Chimps
By Narin Bahar
As inevitable as the school holiday friendly children's films are the game tie ins aimed at encouraging the friovolous spending of pocket money.
But with Kung Fu Panda and Wall-E both providing some great gaming, the bar has been lifted this summer. Does Space Chimps reach it? Not quite, but almost.
This colourful, friendly platformer sees you playing as the film's two main characters, Ham and Luna, who along with their space chimp crew are battling to free imprisoned aliens, defeat the evil Zartog and find your way home. Yep, it's like Lost in Space. With chimps.
Your two playable characters have very different skills - Ham is a fighter while Luna wields a whip or any other projectile weapons she can find around her.
The fighting and platforming element of the game is fun enough - although the sections where you have to control an aircraft are so annoying you'll be flinging your controller away in disgust - but the star of the show is the puzzling element. Check the environment for the bricks and boulders which will help you keep your escape route open, or open new paths.
This is not the prettiest game you'll play this year, but it's engaging enough to while away an afternoon or two.
Space Chimps will definitely keep your little monkeys entertained, but be warned this is a short game with virtually no replay value.
Three stars.
