The No Poo on My Shoe brigade have revealed the high amounts of dog dirt which can load up around the town if the matter is not urgently addressed by careless owners.
That is the message from leading light of the campaign, local mum Louise McCarron, who was the founder of the high profile group two years ago. While the No Poo on My Shoe committee has wound up, the group has NOT stopped and is still very active in terms of school projects and public relations initiatives including local parades and events, and will not stop till the troublesome problem is resolved.
Concerns have been raised by the public that dog poo has been re-surfacing on the streets of Largs and local parks while Millport have also complained about the messy issue.
Louise said: 'The dog dirt has started re-appearing again. It is important people make sure they know that everyone can report specific problem areas or dog owners to 0845 6030590 to eradicate the problem. The campaign has taken a backseat from committee meetings but we are still active and we are regularly going to local schools to get our message across.'
The local campaigner gave some startling facts behind the problem which can cause blindness in children if it is accidentally picked up or a child accidentally comes into contact with it in a local park.
Louise said that in some cases though it is not just the children who need educating.
She said: 'Did you know that depending on weather conditions, it can take up to five weeks for dog"s dirt to decompose? So if just one owner of a wee dog does not pick up, that is 500g a day on our streets and parks from a yorkshire terrier, while you talking about 1kg a day from a St Bernard for instance. Therefore if just three owners of a small, medium and large dog in Largs don"t pick up we will have 8kg of the stuff to hop over, skirt about or clean of our shoes, buggy and wheelchair wheels.'
Bingo the dog mascot is available for hire in other towns in the north coast area who may be interested in promoting the environmental campaign. For more details, contact Louise on 0759 001 0013.
