The Largs Thistle music gig held at JG Sharp's last Saturday was an outstanding success and hopefully the first of many more rock gig fundraisers.

The idea first came about when manager Sandy MacLean suggested hosting a jamming session to the Thistle committee as his son Mark performed and had just released an EP "Standing in Line".

'News' man David Walker was first on stage and put on a superb set with highlights including "You've got to hide you love away" by the Beatles, "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks, and rounded off with Oasis song "The Masterplan" which was a fitting finale.

Next up was Mark MacLean, the manager's son, who played some new tracks of his new EP and a few covers. His gravelly voice is similar to Kelly Jones from The Stereophonics and combined resonance and clarity to excellent effect.

Rounding off the evening was headline act Matt Hickman who opened his set with Talking Heads "Psycho Killer". He then performed some of his own songs before rounding off with a trail-blazing "Amazing Grace" which had everyone in the room singing along.

He also flipped his guitar over and played it almost as if it was a piano as one of his many party tricks and this gained a rapturous reception.

There was a live jamming session after that with Mark MacLean returning to the stage and performing "Wonderwall" among a few other classic tunes.

All in all, it was an intimate gig in the back room of Sharps which was the perfect venue for a gig of that size with around 70 people coming for the event.

Compere was Calum Corral. Thanks go to all the artistes who gave up their time for free for the evening gig and sound technican John Hogan for his valuable help.
