Cunninghame North MSP Kenneth Gibson has revealed to the "News" that he has been in talks with the transport minister to build a new train station stop to serve Largs Yacht Haven and Kelburn Country Centre.

A halt at the marina on the train line which runs right along the perimeter of the yacht haven has been discussed for many years, and the local MSP has already put forward an argument to Scottish Government"s Transport Minister Andrew Wilson about the potential economic benefits such a stop-off would serve. When the possibility was last mooted two years ago, it was estimated that it would cost in the region of 1 million.

The MSP said: 'I have already spoken to the Transport minister about the possibility of a train station stop coming to Largs which would serve the marina and Kelburn Country Centre. It would take a few years for it to happen, so it would be good to look into it now.

'I am also looking at pushing for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to push for sailing to be represented. At present, sailing is not a Commonwealth Games sport. This has come as a surprise to me and I am looking to see if there is any way in which we can include it in times for 2014.' Largs Yacht Haven, Inverclyde Sports Centre and the Watersports centre in Cumbrae have been included in the training brochure for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

MSP Kenneth Gibson speaks below about the arrival of the new Largs sailing jetty at the yacht haven which opens up more yachting event possibilities for the greater economic good of the local district.
