Thistle player manager Bryan Slavin has said that he has been DREAMING about Largs Thistle as he bids to solve the club’s goalscoring dilemma.

Largs fired another blank on Saturday at Maybole, despite dominating the first hour and creating several good openings, and the Thistle boss admitted it was one of the lowest moments he had felt in his entire career.

‘Theesel’ now have a cracker of a cup tie to look forward to as they head to Beith in the second round of the New Coins Automatic West of Scotland Cup on Saturday, 2pm kick-off.

Asked about trying to solve the goalscoring problem, Bryan said: “This is literally a 24 hour job - even my missus tells me I have been even talking about it in my sleep!

“There is not an hour of the day that passes when I am not thinking about it - it is constant. Maybe we are guilty of over-analysing this, but this is something we take really sore - defeats like this. I hope the player are going home and their weekends are ruined after this - as I know Stuart’s and mine’s have been. We need the players to be really hurting after the defeat, so that there is an extra motivation to make it right.

“It is time to get our sleeves rolled up, and put the dancing shoes away, and put the workboots on, and just get stuck in. We can’t rely just on ability we need to fight and scrap for every point as we are right in the mire now. We have eleven league games left, and these games are going to disappear if we don’t get points on the board sharpish, but we are going to put our best foot forward.” Reflecting on the Maybole defeat, Bryan said: “I thought there were times when we controlled a lot of the ball, but again when you don’t put the ball into the net, you don’t win games.

“If we take our chances, we at least get a draw, but I can only keep saying that same story before something needs to give or change, and that is something we will look into.

“I think Maybole players and their management staff were very fair, and they knew they had been in a game. They were delighted to get three points, but that makes it even more galling.

Asked about the turning point in the game, Bryan said: “There is no doubt about it that the missed penalty was a crucial moment - if we scored it, it is 1-1, our tails are up, and their backs are against the wall as we had been on top for the first 20 minutes of the game, but we missed the penalty, and all of a sudden they are re-invigorated, because they have got out of jail, and they go up and score after a mistake by us.

“I can’t say it is unlucky, it is poor as we should be taking our chances, and we at least get a draw. I can only say the same story week after week before something needs to give, or something needs to change, and that is something we will work on.” Asked about how he coped playing again at the age of 37, Bryan said: “I felt alright, given the fact in junior football terms I likely qualify for a winter fuel payment, and I need it after that weather! I felt we were quite secure to be honest, I know we lost two goals, but I didn’t think we were under a lot of pressure generally.” Thistle assistant Stuart Davidson said: “I was gutted. I don’t think we are far away, and if we can take these chances and turn them into goals, I’d say we have got a good chance of staying up - but we have to score these goals.

“We will be going all out to win - it is one of the few cups that Bryan Slavin and me never won as players, despite getting to a final, so it would be good to get a cup run.

“Beith have always got a strong team - they are dangerous upfront, solid at back and hard workign in midfield - we know we are in for a tough game and it will be a good test of our mettle and to see if the players can match that challenge.

“Cup runs are good, but our priority is staying in the league. Although we came half way through, I still feel it is our responsibility to keep Largs in this league.” The Maybole manager said after the game that he believes that Largs can get out of trouble, but Stuart said: “It is nice to get platitudes, but at the end of the day, that is all it is, it is up to the players, and we have to get the job done, and start taking our chances or the games are going to tick down, and the more the games disappear, the more desperate you become.” Watch video below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6KSZg5tJiI Thistle player manager Bryan Slavin has said that he has been DREAMING about Largs Thistle as he bids to solve the club’s goalscoring dilemma.
