Concerns have been raised about cycling provision for a new car parking facility on the outskirts of Largs.

A new “Kelburn marina car park” should be ready for next Easter, it was revealed at a business summit on Tuesday.

The Explore Largs group are driving forward with their ambitious plans, and have managed to get council support to provide marshalling and signage at the new facility.

The site, in land adjacent to Largs Yacht Haven, next to the A78 trunk road between Largs and Fairlie, has room for 220 cars, eight buses, motorcycling parking, and six disabled spaces. Planning permission was received earlier this year Local businessman Peter Valerio said: “It is a good idea in principal, but I don’t believe it will help solve the parking problem. The cycle path along the prom is a non-starter. During a busy summer’s day, you cannot cycle along the prom- someone is going to get injured.

"It is laughable compared to what other people have said that Largs does not have its own dedicated cycle track - I give way to people about twenty times between Aubery and the pier. It is a great idea if you have a dedicated cycle lane, but someone painting a line on the prom is not a cycle path.” “There should be more cycle trails in Largs - it has great potential.” Hotelier Willie Wood, chairman of the Largs BID steering group, said: “It has to start somewhere.” Eric McMillan responded: “In relation to the cycling, I appreciate it is difficult on busy summer days in summer but that is something we have to focus on, and with the concept of getting private bus companies, roller blades, boat hire, there is definitely scope. "Cycling provision is already on offer at the marina, and it has proved popular."
