Ferries have suffered severe disruption on the Largs-Cumbrae service over both Wednesday and Thursday due to dense fog.

Caledonian MacBrayne state that review is due to take place at 5pm.

The dense fog has also affected driving conditions over both days.

Inverkip correspondent Alison Masterson said: "I have seen cars travelling without lights in the thicker mist."

The fog descended on Wednesday morning, and was particularly bad between Fairlie and West Kilbride, while ferries were pulled off service, but returned to service in the afternoon.

However, the fog returned on Wednesday evening, and didn't lift on Thursday morning, resulting in the ferries being cancelled.

A Cal Mac spokesman said: "“It is the vessel master's decision alone to decide whether it is safe to sail or not.

“If, in his or her considered professional opinion, they believe that restricted visibility means it is unsafe to sail, then they will not do so.

“The MV Loch Shira is fitted with two modern, operational marine radars and GPS navigational aids. These are fully compliant with statutory regulations and provide the master with excellent spatial awareness. However, they do not remove the challenges faced when operating in conditions of restricted or zero visibility, especially when operating within close proximity to navigational hazards, port infrastructure and other vessels.

“Radar or ECSs do not provide a fool proof means of collision avoidance."
