Largs man Gordon Dunlop is living the American dream, but on a bike!
Gordon explained: “Myself and a friend, Megan Wycklendt from the US, set off from Anchorage, Alaska at the Largs and Millport Weekly News: of August on the long road south to Ushuaia, Argentina.
“We’re raising money en route for the Scottish charity, Mary’s Meals. Thoughout our entire journey across North and South America, we will be blogging about local initiatives we come across, influential and compassionate people, and inspiring stories to uplift us and restore faith in humanity.”
It has been exhilirating trip so far for Gordon, who is a former Largs Thistle player. He spoke to the ‘News’ on Wednesday morning as we went to press to say: “I’m in remote British Columbia just now but should reach civilisation by the middle of next week!”
When entering the Yukon, one of the westernmost and smallest of Canada’s three federal territories, Gordon said: “We’ve had cars stopped to hand us a coke, offer us energy bars, dinner, beer, or a high five to keep up going. People have stopped us to give us tips on where to camp, or tell us we can stay on their property where there is more protection from the weather. We’ve even had a First Nation elder teach us how to use local plants for healing wounds and minor sickness.”
