The regeneration of the much loved Aubery Park is one of the key highlights of the new £11m Largs masterplan.

Several locations have been highlighted by North Ayrshire Council for general improvements including the north prom, Aubery, Gallowgate Square, Broomfields, Town Centre/station/ferry terminal areas.

Speaking at the Largs Business Improvement District (BID) AGM, hosted in JG Sharps bar, George Hunter, one of the top council officials behind the project, said; "Aubery is really important in the whole plan, as it could be made to be really special. I hope it will encourage people to walk the length of the town, or cycle.

"With the right type of investment, it could be something quite dynamic, and really add to the mix of what Largs has to offer."

The pond area is going to be re-designed under the proposals, with new play areas.

Another option being examined is introducing beach huts, and providing more bike racks, and places where people can store kayaks, and enhanced water activities in the shore area.

An extensive document is available via the North Ayrshire Council website showing various features, including modernising the Largs promenade. It will be made available at various access points in the town, including the Largs BID office in Gallowgate Lane.

Another need identified was for improving the prom with better shelters, resurfacing, street furniture and a need for better sporting facilities.

George Hunter stated that a lot of the improvements which were included in the programme had been suggested by the public during recent consultations.

He added that well supported measures included improved access to the beach area, and a need to improve the general decor and appearance of Gallowgate Square, improving transport links, and a better all around 'connectivity' between all areas of the town with a similar branding or image with perhaps a nautical theme.

George said: "We need to look within the masterplan and help reinforce the character of the town to support what is special about Largs.

"Largs is a fantastic town, and by carrying out the range of improvements, we are hoping local people and businesses continue to invest in the area. There is an opportunity to have something really iconic in the town, and improved facilities for sailors, kayakers and other water based activities along the shore."
