Largs & District Horticultural Society prepares to host a special anniversary next year.

The popularity of the Largs Flower Show grew and the show was visited by all including the well-known local worthies of the day.

In 1898 none other than Lord and Lady Kelvin opened the show. The show has also been opened by the Earl of Glasgow; the Countess of Glasgow; Lady MacAndrew; Provosts of Largs and even celebrities who came to perform at Barrfields.

Artillery Hall (at the foot of Seamore Street); Bath Hall; Stevenston Institute and Barrfields were all past venues. Most people will remember the “Big Top” – the marquee which was on the North Shore where the car park is now in the 60’s and 70’s.

Next year the Society will celebrate the wonderful achievement of its 175th anniversary of the first Flower Show. Do you have any memories of the show, cups, medals, photographs, old schedules or memories relating to the Flower Show? Do you remember the “Big Top” at the shorefront? Have you any photographs of these?

If you can help, phone Secretary Etta Strachan on 01475 689423. It is hoped to have a historical display at the Flower Show next year.
