The former Millport East Church is currently up for sale for a knockdown price of £60,000.

The church, located in George Street, near the seafront, has been out of use since 1971, and was up for sale for £150,000 with Right Move in 2011.

However, Express Estate Agency are now offering the former church building on the property market, including attached cottage, subject to the necessary permission.

Their website states: "Planning Permission was granted previously, and now lapsed, for conversion in to four luxury spacious two bedroomed apartments."

The Buildings at Risk register for Scotland Register for Scotland website describes the building as 'at risk'.

In July 2009, an external inspection stated that the roof had recently been renewed, but the rest of the building is in poor condition. Permission had been granted by North Ayrshire Council in May 2007 for conversion to a dwelling house.

Further loss of glazing was reported in 2012, and the most recent inspection in October 2014, reported that slates missing, and large bushes had established themselves around the building, whilst gutters were broken.

The church is described as a simple rectangular plan church, and attached to the north gable is a two storey, four bay manse or hall.

A spokesman for Express Estate Agency said: "We have had a lot of interest in the former East Church since it went on sale, and the price has been significantly reduced because it is in need of renovation, although it is quite unusual for a property of its size to be as low valued."

It was known as the United Presbyterian Church until 1931, when it united with Cumbrae Parish Church. They both co-existed for a while, as West and East Church, and it was also used for a period as a home for disabled children, particularly during holidays.

The former East Church has been a hot topic of debate on social media websites on the island.

One resident said: "It's such a shame that the former church has fallen into a state of complete disrepair. You'd think there would be a way to save it for the community to use."

Last Christmas, Cumbrae Parish Church also closed due to disrepair, and the church now operates out of the DA Hall. Cumbrae Parish Church are currently fundraising to provide a new church facility on the island. More details are available at http://cumbraeparishchurch.org/
