A Fairlie roads campaigner is calling for a traffic island to be permanently removed from the A78, after another accident at the site earlier this month.

Last Monday evening, a car smashed into the island, causing the lamp-post to be removed from the site, which acts as a crossing spot for pedestrians.

However, after several crashes at the spot over the years, David Telford believes that traffic lights should be introduced to help pedestrians cross the road at the north side of Fairlie.

David, who is a community councillor, said: "I have never particularly thought it worked all that well - they wouldn't give us proper traffic lights or a pelican crossing, and this was seen as the next best thing, but it is worse than useless.

"It was designed to help people cross the road, but I am not quite sure what it is achieving."

During recent years, villager Charlie Vassie campaigned to Transport Scotland and also wrote letters to politicians in a bid to try and bring traffic lights to the north end of the village but to no avail.

David added: "Let's have a pelican crossing so that people can safely cross the road."

This week, there were rumours circulating that the traffic island may not be replaced after all, because of the introduction of a new road entrance in that particular area, which will be leading to the Dawn Homes housing site, which is being built.
